What the Work Has Passed Through
Ritual and Testimony in Post-Vanitas

Post-Vanitas does not merely represent a wound.

It asks what remains after an event has passed through matter.

In my practice, ritual is the means by which that passage becomes material. I break, bind, seal, gild, and reconstruct. Fractures occur. Fragments shift. Surfaces are altered. Traces remain.

What matters is not destruction itself.

What matters is that after the event, the work is no longer what it was before.

I call this consequence.

Consequence is not a conclusion. It is the irreversible difference left by having passed through an event.

When that difference remains within the surface, form, and structure of the work, the work begins to bear witness to what has occurred.

This is what I mean by testimony.

Ritual is the passage from representation to testimony.

Through ritual, the event does not remain outside the work as a subject. It enters the material. It alters it. And the work carries that alteration forward.

From here, two propositions follow.

Wound becomes form.

Form is the visible condition left by an event upon a body.

Collapse becomes structure.

Structure is the order that emerges after collapse — the way forms, traces, and bodies reorganize themselves and continue.

Sealing belongs to this structure. It does not return the work to what it was before. It establishes a new order from what remains.

This is why ritual is necessary in Post-Vanitas.

The work does not merely show transformation.

It passes through transformation and bears its consequence within its own body.
