Generation After Rupture

A Methodology of Thought for the Post-Vanitas Era

Jiya Lim, Maison Philosophe, Busan

Preface

For decades, contemporary art has sought to move beyond questions of figuration and representation toward inquiries into existence and relationality.

Yet the present world can no longer be adequately described through the languages of “emptiness” or “deconstruction.”

What is now required is a technology of thought capable of sustaining life after rupture.

I. Post-Vanitas Thought Begins with Rupture

Earlier modes of thought remained concerned with either establishing or dismantling being.
Post-Vanitas, by contrast, takes as its point of departure the condition after existence has already collapsed.

Here, rupture is not an event but a durational state.
Thought does not begin prior to completion, but under the operative conditions of collapse.

II. Encapsulated Rupture — The First Apparatus of Thought

Post-Vanitas does not interpret rupture.
It contains it.

At this stage, thought moves away from explanation toward structuralization.

Wounds are neither exposed nor resolved.
They are sealed within calibrated forms.

Post-Vanitas does not represent suffering;
it designs the conditions under which suffering can persist without domination.

III. 破後生成 (Pahu Saengseong) — Becoming-After

Earlier discourses translated the “after” into the language of recovery.
Post-Vanitas defines the after as re-operation.

Life does not return.
It begins again under altered operational rules.

This transformation is termed
破後生成 (Pahu Saengseong) — Becoming-After,
a state in which the logic of existence itself is recalibrated.

IV. Repetitive Ritual — The Operative System of Becoming-After

Becoming-After is not realized through conceptual articulation.
It is sustained solely through action.

Here, repetition is not affective expression but the
operative system that keeps post-ruptural existence in motion.

  • An expanded material field centered on black glaze

  • An iterative protocol of rupture, golden intervention, and liquid infusion

  • A circumductive rite in which ceramic forms are rotated while gold is applied, converting post-ruptural time from linear progression into circular persistence

In this regime, life does not speak meaning.
It persists as form.

V. Silence as Form

If 2025 established identity through dense narrative,
the Post-Vanitas era after 2026 enters a phase of minimized interpretation.

Silence is not absence but an operational structure.
Becoming-After becomes legible not when it is explained,
but when it is repeated.

Conclusion

Post-Vanitas is neither a philosophy of erasure nor an aesthetics of healing.

It is the articulation of
破後生成 — the methodology by which existence continues to operate after rupture.

From Busan,
on the surface of black glaze,
Post-Vanitas quietly rehearses
a life beyond collapse.
